According to eternal inflation and string theory, there may
be multiple universes with different properties only a few of which are
capable of sustaining life. Even in those that do, it could take millions of
solar systems to produce a planet where living creatures would actually
evolve. Only a small percentage of life-bearing
planets may be expected to produce civilizations, and among these far-flung and
disparate worlds, ours is possibly the single one to have developed Champagne. It therefore behooves us during this holiday
season to pop a cork and lift a glass.
In the vast cosmos opportunities for joy are rare and shouldn’t be
missed.
